About Us

Nearly two centuries ago, the first grapevines were planted in Kerikeri. That was the work of Reverend Samuel Marsden, the driving force behind the establishment of Anglican mission stations in New Zealand.

Nearly two decades ago, Rod and Cindy MacIvor followed the footsteps of Samuel Marsden with the establishment of the vineyard and winery they named after him. Now under the charitable trust of Mike and Shirley Endean, Marsden Winery endeavours to grow and support Northland wine and its winegrowers.

The charm, style, atmosphere and history to be found at Marsden Winery make it a superb venue for gatherings and events. The rendered building, designed by eccentric Welsh-born architect Martyn Evans, looks as matured as its European counterparts, without losing its archetypal Northland character.

In 2012 we welcomed Winemaker and Viticulturist Justin Atkinson who has a minimalist approach to winemaking. Born and raised in Northland, Justin knows the many nooks and crannies, different micro climates and soil structures in the area.

At a latitude of 35° S, this part of New Zealand is called the winterless north. Pruning can be done in T-shirts and bud burst arrives as early as June, making for a long season. Grapes are hand harvested from low yielding vines, and gently destemmed within hours of being picked.

Whilst our aromatic white wines are tank fermented, the rest of the wines are matured in French oak barrels for 11 to 16 months depending on the cuvee and the needs imposed by the vintage. This creates vibrant and expressive wines that have great structure, intensity and above all, elegance.
